Rep. Jerry McNerney should have voted to protect privacy

This is an open letter to Rep. Jerry McNerney:

Rep. McNerney, it is not merely upsetting, but extremely disturbing to learn that you voted against Rep. Justin Amash’s Amendment to H.R. 2397 on July 24 which would have restricted the NSA’s blanket collection of phone metadata [1]. This vote was an important test to determine which representatives are complacent in allowing the NSA and other agencies to abridge the freedom of speech and commit unreasonable searches and seizures. Amash’s Amendment would have commenced a step in the right direction for our nation — a move towards abandoning our current security state while putting the freedoms of the people first.

When elected, you are responsible to uphold justice and enforce the laws that would protect us in the 9th District of California. You are bound by oath to follow the Constitution, and have seemingly overlooked the First and Fourth Amendments. You voted to violate our human right to privacy.

You have lost my vote for any future elections you may be running for, and I will tell everyone in your district of your inability to carry out your office.

If you wish to regain my confidence, and my vote, you will immediately support and stand by Rep. Rush Holt’s “Surveillance State Repeal Act” which would end the Patriot Act and the FISA Amendments Act (each of which contains provisions that allow this dragnet surveillance to continue).

Vote to preserve our republic, and I will continue to vote to keep you in office. I welcome your opinion on this matter.
