With the families of many young kids on the east side of town not able to pay the weekend entry fee to Blakely Pool during the summer of 2012, attendance had been down and operating costs were not being covered.
In the spring of last year, when it became apparent that the city of Lodi would not be able to operate Blakely Pool during the 2013 summer because of anticipated low attendance, Jeff Hood at Parks and Rec came up with a plan to seek private funding to keep the pool open on weekends.
Individuals, groups and a number of businesses became sponsors and donated the funds that covered the $650-per weekend operating costs to keep the pool open for 15 weekends during the summer. It worked and attendance almost doubled.
I formed a group of my Woodbridge neighbors to fund one weekend last summer and we’re doing it again this year. Hopefully others in the community will join us in this worthwhile effort. Give Jeff a call at 209-333-6742 if you want to help keep the Blakely Pool open again this summer for young kids in that east side neighborhood.
