Letter: The House is the people’s branch of government

Absolutely no legal, ethical, traditional, moral or logical rule requires that the House of Representatives fund a program Americans don’t want and can’t afford, extravagant expenses passed years ago but left unfunded by a different, more radical congress. On the contrary, Article 1 of the Constitution directs: “All bills for raising revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives.” For the House is the People’s Branch.

Politicians deeply entrenched in lies feel a compulsion, called Passive Aggressive Syndrome, to accuse others of their own evil. It’s loathsome for Obama to hypocritically say that he won’t negotiate “with a gun held to the head of the American people.” He’s holding the gun! He’s demanding mosey.

The president, elected by all Americans, is responsible for making things work, for reconciling differences. But Obama refuses even to discuss seven reasonable proposals from the House to reopen government, including a “clean” continuing resolution. Now he won’t even talk unless the House, up front, raises taxes and spending. It frosts me that the media echoes the “hostage,” “terrorist” and “ransom” rhetoric of the man in power who won’t even sit down and talk.

The House had absolutely no authority to close federal monuments. Obama has executive power. He chose even to close The Cliff House in San Francisco, sitting on leased federal land. To punish Americans, Obama foregoes both rent and taxes from a successful restaurant. And he saves zero.

Park officials say their instructions are to maximize pain in shutting down fields, monuments, scenic overlooks, beaches, parks, trails, private restaurants and inns. Wickedly, the liberal media speaks of a “House shutdown.”

The House must dig in to protect people like Tom Waschura, whose insurance premium goes up by $10,000.

And Michael Cerpok, a leukemia patient who lost his employer health insurance because Obamacare deems it too generous, raising his cost from $4,500 to $26,000.

Harry Reid doesn’t represent these beleaguered Americans. He says his job is “to support the federal government.” It’s the House of Representatives that supports people like us. May God bless them.

Typical Tea Party illogic. Yes all spending bills must originate in the House but to become law it must be passed by the Senate also and signed by the President unless they can override a Veto( just like Obamacare was). Why is it we always have to explain how the constitution works when talking to a Tea Party person?

The President would have signed a clean CR anytime. You got that wrong

When you threaten to shutdown the Government and nuke ours and the worlds economy unless you get your way you are holding everyone else hostage to your demands. You are a terrorist.

The CR was passed at spending levels demanded by the Republicans. No one demanded higher spending levels to pass the CR

Here is the big fact about the House of Representatives in the last election. More people voted for Democrats than Republicans. If it was not for Republican Gerrymandering the Democrats would hold the House.

Only 24% of Americans supported what the Tea party wackos on the CR and the debt limit issue. I wish you Tea Party types would quit saying a majority of Americans support your insane ideas and actions. They do not and never will. You are clearly in a very small minority and this little temper tantrum over the CR and the debt limit just alerted more Americans to what a danger you are to the Republic, the process of government and the welfare of ordinary Americans.

Mr Stearns in the future please try getting your facts straight.
