This letter is to the Planning Commissioners. The undersigned read with dismay Sara Jane Pohlman’s Lodi News-Sentinel article of Nov. 2, 2012 regarding the denial of an application to convert the Windcrest Estate into a spa associated with the Wine and Roses’ facilities.

Wine and Roses is a jewel in the community. I am familiar with the Towne residence, now Wine and Roses, as the Townes were friends and customers of my parents’ insurance brokerage. I especially appreciate the spectacular yet tasteful development that the operators of Wine and Roses have constructed.

In retirement, after 30 years of service in three San Joaquin County departments, we have moved to Sonoma County. It is always a pleasure to return to Lodi to visit friends and attend functions, due in major part to the hospitality of Wine and Roses.

In the last seven years that we have been living in Sonoma County, there have been a large number of winery and resort properties developed in our area. Frequently, the mitigation of concerns is accomplished through the “use” permits, restrictions on the number of events, hours of operation, etc. without foreclosing the benefits of development and employment opportunities for the area.

Please reconsider the application imposing restrictions deemed necessary to mitigate impositions on the area.

Should graduations return to the Grape Bowl?

Lodi Unified leaders are moving Lodi and Tokay high school graduations from the Grape Bowl to the Spanos Center at UOP in Stockton. They cite limited seating, costs and unpredictable weather at the Grape Bowl. But others say graduations at the Grape Bowl are an important Lodi tradition, and one reason many supported renovating the stadium. What do you think?
