This is an open letter to parents of children who will be out trick-or-treating on Halloween. Please read this to your kids before they go out.

Please be safe and careful while out trick-or-treating this Halloween. Watch for cars when crossing streets, and carry a flashlight in the dark. Don’t be greedy with the goodies passed out, and say thank you. Wait until you get home to eat the candy collected. But if you do sneak something yummy, don’t drop the wrapper on the sidewalk or in the gutter. Don’t be a litterbug! Did you know that the day after Halloween is the worst trash day of the year around here? Really — no kidding!

So please, kids, be safe, have fun and enjoy the treats, but no mess all over the sidewalks and streets. Just put your wrappers back in the candy bag!

Parents, thanks for your help in teaching kids not to litter on Halloween. It truly is the worst trash day of the year, but it doesn’t need to be. In Lodi, Stockton and Galt, litter that gets into the gutter runs down into the drain, which empties into the Delta waterways. So in these towns, we need to be especially vigilant about keeping trash and wrappers off our streets and sidewalks so they don’t end up in streams, rivers, Delta channels, estuaries and flowing out to the ocean.

Should graduations return to the Grape Bowl?

Lodi Unified leaders are moving Lodi and Tokay high school graduations from the Grape Bowl to the Spanos Center at UOP in Stockton. They cite limited seating, costs and unpredictable weather at the Grape Bowl. But others say graduations at the Grape Bowl are an important Lodi tradition, and one reason many supported renovating the stadium. What do you think?
