PALS, People Assisting Lodi Animal Shelter, recently held our event National Homeless Animal Day on Aug. 16.

We wanted to thank those who help us through donations, volunteering at PALS Adoption Center, and City Manager Blair King, Chief David Main, Jeanie Biskup and their officers at the animal shelter for helping us make the plight of homeless animals a better one.

We also make special mention of Mayor JoAnne Mounce, who helped PALS with the ribbon-cutting of the new "Zippy Zone" dog run at the Shelter. Through the efforts with our 'Who's in the Dog House' event, community volunteers, shelter staff and PALS raised $20,000, which allowed us to put in a dog run, which allows the shelter animals to have a place to exercise and play. Thank you to Wally Case Construction for seeing this project through to the end.

A special thanks goes to the Lodi Arts Commission for awarding PALS a beautiful mural design by local artist Tony Segale. This mural is on the Shelter wall and faces Kettleman Lane.

These are trying times in our economy. Unfortunately, we are experiencing an even larger population of animals at PALS and the Shelter. Through foreclosures and lost jobs, people are surrendering their animals or just leaving them behind when they leave their homes at alarming rates.

While PALS works closely with the Lodi Animal Shelter, we have created an environment that is humane to all animals through our Adoption Center; we need volunteers to help at the center and foster homes that will take in a dog or cat for a short time while we find them homes, along with donations to help sustain our costs. These donations are tax deductible, as PALS is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization.

If you can help in any way financially, fostering or volunteering at the center, you would make a huge difference in the progress that we are making at PALS.

Please contact Nancy Alumbaugh at 209-327-0902 or Kelly Higgs at 209-603-2133. Our mailing address is 2414 W. Kettleman Lane Ste 210-2207, Lodi, CA 95242. Or you can reach us via e-mail: pals.lodi@yahoo.com

Should graduations return to the Grape Bowl?

Lodi Unified leaders are moving Lodi and Tokay high school graduations from the Grape Bowl to the Spanos Center at UOP in Stockton. They cite limited seating, costs and unpredictable weather at the Grape Bowl. But others say graduations at the Grape Bowl are an important Lodi tradition, and one reason many supported renovating the stadium. What do you think?
