Let’s save juvenile fish and reinforce the Pigs Lake levee at the same time

Lodi Lake is a fish nursery. Every spring, fish migrate into the lake to spawn and lay eggs or give birth to their young: black bass, blue gill, red eared sun fish, crappie and many others.

The problem is that every winter, Lodi Lake is drained. When the lake is drained, it forms three large mud puddles. The juvenile fish are trapped in these mud puddles and become seagull food.

When Woodbridge Irrigation District built the new dam, they told us the lake would stay full year-round. That hasn’t happened. If the lake were to stay full year-round, within two years we would have a trophy fishery here inside the city limits.

If the lake is going to be drained every winter (and it looks like it is), I would like to see the bottom graded so that it drains cleanly — dumping the juvenile fish back into the river. The Pigs Lake levee needs to be reinforced. Material could be removed from the Lodi Lake bed to reinforce Pigs Lake. It’s too late to do it this year, but we could get everything ready so next year when Lodi Lake is drained we could be ready to move.

This is a win-win situation. Lodi Lake gets graded so that it drains cleanly, the juvenile fish are saved and Pigs Lake levee gets reinforced. What’s not to like about that?
