Letter: Garden planters had nostalgic value beyond being plant holders

This morning I had to wake up my mom and tell her that her four stone pedestal planters had been stolen. I noticed this as I was taking my 16-year-old son to school. When I expressed how upset his grandma would be, he replied, “It’s a terrible world, Mom.”

How sad that at 16, this is his view. Unfortunately, in this case, he is right.

These planters were special to my mom. She and my dad had picked them out together. My mom loves to garden, and my dad wanted these for her so she would be able to plant her favorite flowers in them. My dad passed in 2011, completely unexpectedly the day before his birthday. Two weeks after his passing, my mom and dad would have been married 44 years. The day after that was Thanksgiving. Six months after his passing, I was diagnosed with cancer. My mom has stood by my side and helped emotionally support my husband and children through this difficult time. The way she deals with her grief and stress is to garden.

I hope whoever stole these planters from her needed them more than she did, but I fail to see how. Because of medical bills, a kid in college and a kid in his senior year of high school, we can’t replace these planters for my mom. For whoever stole these, you stole a lot more than four planters.

Should graduations return to the Grape Bowl?

Lodi Unified leaders are moving Lodi and Tokay high school graduations from the Grape Bowl to the Spanos Center at UOP in Stockton. They cite limited seating, costs and unpredictable weather at the Grape Bowl. But others say graduations at the Grape Bowl are an important Lodi tradition, and one reason many supported renovating the stadium. What do you think?
