Letter: Progressive thought and my dad, the fool

A few weeks ago my local channel of choice reported that the Affordable Care Act empowered people to make choices that would make their lives better. They didn’t report the government’s illustration of empowerment.

The president’s chief financial adviser stated it would be like someone who is working 65 hours a week and not qualifying for subsidies for health care, choosing to change jobs that require just 35 hours a week. By making this choice the employee becomes eligible for subsidies, therefore able to purchase health Insurance. Empowerment is illustrated in giving up nearly half your income in order to purchase health insurance.

The next week they reported the governor was going to allow businesses to wait until 2015 to comply with ACA mandates with respect to insuring their employees. They didn’t report that the governor requires businesses to file affidavits with the IRS explaining any decisions that would result in shrinking their work force.

My dad, the fool, didn’t graduate from high school, was a POW in his service to the country, operated heavy equipment, ran his own Douglas oil service station and started a tire business in conjunction with the station. He eventually bought the only ambulance company at the time, serving a 465 square mile area. “Progressive” thought, illustrated above, wasn’t so prominent during his life.

In my dad’s shadow, my older brother was a successful executive at this country’s second largest health care company. My other brother is a high school administrator, teacher and athletic coach. My younger sister is a physician. Like my dad I have a handicap, my children. My oldest son is an executive at Hertz Corporation, his brother is a high school vice principal. Their younger brother is on track to be a civil engineer. Their sister is a special education educator.

My choice? Upon graduation from college, I chose self employment, starting as a carpenter. Over the past 40-plus years I have remodeled and built homes. I would rather be the fool than the “progressive” illustrated in the words of the president’s chief financial officer.

I hope that our country rejects “progressive” thought embraced by many of our politicians.

Maybe he "wants" to claim that, but he can't.

Odd that most of the comments made by the "conservative right" are echoed later. Two or three days from now, it will be another clever saying or witty observation obtained through study and thought, and oh!, someone said that very same thing on Fox and Fiends this morning.

So, along with all of your other recent accusations, i.e., casting the votes of dead people, now Baxxter, you are accusing me of NEVER PAYING MY TAXES?

If I paid taxes, I paid for the benefits I get. And I have paid a lot of taxes in the 40 years that I have been in the workplace.

Good for you Joe there are however those who haven't been as successful and if they go without insurance it is going to cost me more in the long run ( sorry I'm just not willing to raise children and grand children in a world were people are wasting away on our sidewalks) so if you don't mind get out of the way so that the rest of us can take care of business and the future of this country.

Joe I thought we were discussing a successful liberal program? The problem is not that liberal programs are unsuccessful only that they do not accomplish what YOU want. From my perspective they are working fine. The CBO report on ACA shows that not only will ACA cost less than expected it will reduce the deficit, insure more citizens and allow those trapped in a job to move on to better things or perhaps retirement. I'm sure those on the right would like to see Granpa keep working but many of us think that those walmart greeters should go put their feet up somewhere and enjoy their golden years. All you can see are deadbeats, see it's just a matter of perspective.

Eric, I only get what I have PAID for or what I am now PAYING for. Unlike some people on these threads who get FREE healthcare, compliments of taxpayers although they didn't do squat to earn it.

Bobbin, please mention what I said in the previous post is INCORRECT. Regtardless of when, where or how I came up with the information is immaterial. The FACTS are FACTS. Prove me wrong.

Eric, perhaps that is where YOU drew your source but that wasn't the only time and place these absurdities were expressed. What amazes me more is the fact that a liberal is using FOX as a resource. Liberals usually accuse FOX of lying to their viewing audience. It is refreshing to see a liberal substantiating the fact that FOX allows liberals the opportunity to express their side of the story. Something you will NEVER see on MSNBC.
By the way, Eric, I am still waiting for the list of successful liberal programs you claim exist. Think REAL hard.

Sorry Joe the basic premise came from an interview with Senator Cardin by Chris Wallace on Fox Sunday, I didn't know Fox was a "liberal propaganda program" and yes we are going to give health insurance away or heavily subsidize it. Are you not getting something, we are planning on making sure everyone gets health care. Not sure where car theft comes into the picture.

So you, Baxxter, want to claim that everything that YOU wrote in YOUR comment isn't straight from Sean Hannity and Bill O'Reilly and other conservatives propaganda sites? (Which, of course, you flatly deny watching, reading, or otherwise absorbing in some other mystic manner).

    Chuckle!

Yep, Mr. Barrow not only listens/watches all of the liberal propaganda programs, sadly, he believes them. I have heard all of his “points” extolling the virtues of ACA on MSNBC by the Obama idolizing Chris Matthews, Ed Schultz and Rachel Maddow. Only a liberal would try to spin losing your job as being a good thing. Voluntary job loss, who actually swallows this propaganda? ACA enrollment is a disaster and yet the liberals attempt to spin it as good. It is akin to massive nationwide auto thefts occurring and the liberals giving a glowing report about the great trend in auto sales. They all owned cars before they were stolen and were forced to replace them. What the HHS will never tell you is how many of the enrollees were ones that lost their healthcare because of ACA, how many are getting it FREE or heavily subsidized and how many are enrolling and actually paying. Shhh, if you know, don’t tell they don’t want anyone else to know.

    "be the fool"

    My choice?

Upon completing the reading of this letter, I choose to print it out on top quality bond paper. Later, in the my shop I'll find an appropriately sized scrap of 3/8" pine to which I'll gently glue Terry's letter to. Being sure to smooth out any bubbles. After it dries, I'll carefully trim to size, sand and smooth the rough edges, and apply 2 coats of clear acrylic.

Tomorrow I'll break out the scroll saw, cut it into twelve pieces and call it a puzzle.

This Christmas I'll give to the oldest daughter of an acquaintance at church. She's a single mother of three, who works hard at two jobs and goes to school part time. They're finally have decent medical coverage.

    Maybe they'll appreciate Terry's sentiments.

    ??

I don’t expect my conservative friends to understand they don’t seem to be able to see a society creating a better life for its citizens all they can see are takers. Never mind that more than a few people are still working only to keep insurance until they get Medicare. Now those people have an option and they can retire and purchase their own affordable insurance. These are not takers, the people in this position I know are hardworking Americans who have worked their whole life, they own homes and have retirement savings they just simply can’t afford health care as it used to be.
Now families with children can stop working two and three jobs to afford healthcare they can spend more time with their children. Who doesn’t think this country needs at least one stay at home parents. Young people over 26 are free to go to school without the worry that one injury might wipe them out. This improves their life and in turn creates a stronger more productive society.
What Terry doesn’t understand is that almost all of the jobs lost due to the ACA are voluntary. These are people who have been trapped by the high cost of healthcare and are now free to make decisions that empower their individual lives and society as a whole.
