The elementary music program is happy to report that the fifth-grade students of Lodi Unified School District will be able to participate in band or string instrument lessons this coming school year. The board of education is bringing back the elementary instrumental program after eliminating the program in 2008 due to budget cuts.

The board is also providing funding for start-up instruments for the students. Band and string instruments are expensive. We are starting band with a bare-bones set of flutes, clarinets, trumpets, trombones and percussion. The string instruments provided will be violins and one or two cellos per school with strings classes.

The music teachers are hoping that residents who have an instrument that is in good, usable condition might donate them to Lodi Unified so more students will have a chance to play. We are looking for not only the instruments listed above, but also saxophones, violas, baritones, string bass — actually, any instrument that is in working order.

If you would like to help give a student a chance to play an instrument, please donate your instrument that is no longer being used. For more information, email Carol Kirst at ckirst@lodiunified.net.

I wish I ahd an instrument to donate. I certainly hope many others will be able to do so. What a wonderful cause.

Wonderful that music is being brought back. I was wondering if this is only for 5th graders, if so, what happens when they become 6th graders? Is this just a one year program for students?
