Here is a suggestion — and only that. Next year, when the float passes by, if you're offended, simply turn your back on it. If everyone that it offends does that simple thing, then just maybe someone will get the hint you don't care to hear about their private life. When does the personal life become so important that it outshines any and all accomplishments of the individual, and must be taught in schools? Whether the person is gay or straight — white, black, Hispanic, etc. — only male or female should be mentioned so that the "he/she" pronoun can be easily used.

Is it mandated that we take our children to an R- or X-rated movie, watch a TV program that doesn't reflect our personal morals, go to a store or restaurant that is not of our liking? No. Do the same here. They may have a right to be in the parade, but you also have a right to turn away, as well as it is your right as the parent to answer your child as honestly or creatively as you wish if asked, "What is a rainbow float?" But please do not be mean or hurtful; there is too much already. Teach your child the ABC's — Acceptance, Beliefs and Commitment. Reading, writing and arithmetic wouldn't hurt either.

A child may not always listen, but always hears.

They don't have to condone or condemn, merely accept that being is a person. Do not force me and I shall in return not force you. And that the final right is reserved for our Creator.
