This is an open letter to the property owner somewhere around Peltier and Davis roads near the river who thinks it is necessary to shoot off the Zon gun every 15 minutes from the morning until well after 11 p.m.

Guess what? The gun doesn’t scare the doves, the cottontails, the quail nor the squirrels. All you are doing is irritating your human neighbors. Don’t you think it is time to have some consideration? I realize that consideration in the “country” is sometimes hard to come by, but come on, give your neighbors a break.

Reminds me of people who build their house next to an active airport then gripe about the noise and try to get the airport shut down.

Not farming related but on the topic of the sparkle tape.

I had birds nesting in my eaves for a couple years. Worst part was the constant bird droppings on my nice deck and furniture. So last year before they came back I hung sparkle tape and netting to the eaves. The sparkle tap is more there so the birds can see the netting. NO problems with the birds this year.

On a farmers note, I live close to Cherry farms and hear the booming for a couple weeks a year. I get use to the boom very quickly and most of the time, unless I am listening for it, I don't hear it.

:Ever see a bird laugh? Just try using that red/silver sparkle tape."

This reminds me of the squirrels at the dog park that dangle just 6 feet above the ground, clinging to the tree bark, chattering wildly to the dogs who think they can catch them.

Quite comical and the dogs can stay entertained for quite awhile until the squirrels get bored and dash off to the top of the tree metaphorically thumbing their noses at the poor frustrated pooches.

yeah, some people didn't read the story of Peter Rabbit and Mr. McGregor, and don't know how to act in the country after leaving the city. Green Acres come to mind?

It's only part of the reason homes and agricultural lands do not mix well unless you are prepared for it. Yet people still live next to a railroad track, Highway 99 and the Cannery. After a week or so your body just doesn't hear it anymore.

I do not use Zon guns any longer since a new neighbor built a house in close proximity to it's location. I put it on a timer as a last resort to appease. Birds eventually figure out it's patterns and tune it out as well. The challenge of bird damage is still there so there is no magic cure. The neighbor is still there too trespassing and all that comes with simply being in the same proximity to a functioning business. Maybe the gun is a two - fer.

Ever see a bird laugh? Just try using that red/silver sparkle tape. My Dad used to use old TV dinner trays hanging on sticks. Bang- bangidy -bang and flashidy -flash now there was a good old fashioned farmer fix it I ever saw one. It went along with the baling wire fixes that worked better than any new "official" remedies for problems that pop up.

I think you have it backwards, Mr. Scott.

Ms. Dentone has lived in Acampo for a while, but this is the first time she has commented about this neighbor.

Most likely the NEIGHBOR is the newbie who doesn't know how to deal with birds and rodents on their property and ordered this "equipment" online.

How nerve-racking it must be to hear a BOOM every 15 minutes.

How long would YOU last with that noise in YOUR neighborhood.

Ms. Dentone is a typical NIMBY. If she lived in town she'd be complaining about the neighbor with the pool and 3 kids being loud every afternoon.

And I'll venture a guess on two things: 1) that farmers land has been in their family for 3-5 generations, and 2) Ms Dentone recently moved to the country.
