Lodi Rainbow Project is working to improve Lodi

Updated

As the Lodi Rainbow Project met on Dec. 16, we addressed the supportive and unsupportive Letters to the Editor regarding the LRP participation in the Parade of Lights. We also read their comments. This discussion shows us in the LRP that we need to work on acceptance, tolerance, equality and personal growth in the beautiful city of Lodi.

The Lodi Rainbow Project is a catalyst for personal growth, acceptance and equality for LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered) people and their allies in the Lodi area. We meet monthly to discuss ways to improve Lodi and the surrounding areas, not just for the LGBT community but for everyone. We have been working with the city on park clean-ups. We have also donated to the Lodi Adopt-A-Child organization and helped the Downtown Lodi Business Partnership by purchasing a float in the Parade of Lights.

Being in the parade was not to flaunt our sexual orientation, nor was it intended to offend anyone. We wanted to show that we are willing to help Lodi become a better place. This gave us the chance to come together and show the community that we are a group for those who are LGBT or LGBT-friendly. There was nothing out of line with any rule set forth by the DLBP.

While the parade was in progress, members of the LRP did get glares and stares by people, and some chose to yell obscenities at us as we passed. All the while members of the LRP did not react; we smiled and waved, wishing everyone cheer in this holiday season.

We are looking forward to the next year's parade. We also welcome anyone interested in the Lodi Rainbow Project to attend a meeting. We will post the meetings here in the newspaper and online at lodirainbowproject.wordpress.com.

Peace, love, unity and respect is all we ask for.
