Drivers, cyclists and police should work together
In his letter "Lodi police should enforce bicycle traffic laws," Thursday, Oct. 4, Keith Walters shares my amazement at the number of adults riding bicycles on the sidewalks in Lodi, as well as traveling against traffic. Few halt at stop signs, and I've even seen some riders run red lights. Is it possible they think there are no traffic rules that apply to bicycle riders?
I lived in L.A. County for 36 years and can't recall ever seeing an adult ride a bicycle on the sidewalk before arriving in Lodi. I wondered why there was such a great difference between my previous domicile and Lodi. I didn't have to drive on Lodi streets for very long to observe something that may solve this mystery.
Many drivers cross the solid line separating the traffic lane from the bicycle lane, and drive long distances in the bicycle lane before turning right. Bicyclists don't want to be struck by a car while using the bike lane, and can anyone blame them? Mr. Walters thinks the Lodi police should do something. I doubt they will.
Several years ago, while driving, I nearly hit a bicyclist who rode into the street from the sidewalk. After parking, I asked a police officer who was nearby if he had seen the near miss. He just shrugged and continued his conversation with a citizen. Police officers are apparently more interested in manning DUI checkpoints and picking up some overtime rather than taking part in a program which may lead to saving lives.

Cliff you have misunderstood part of my letter.
I do not blame LPD, I think the officers on the street have a hard enough job without people making comments like you did in your letter. Directives to the street officers come from the top, if bicycle enforcement is not a priority for the brass then it wont get done
