On a lighter, human-interest touch, how many 17-year-old girls have five GIs in Afghanistan make a video of themselves singing "Happy Birthday" to her? That happened to my granddaughter, Amy Cimorelli, on her 17th birthday, July 1.

One of the soldiers wrote a comment on the video, "You gotta be here to understand — we'll have a terrible, long day here, come back, and someone will start blasting 'Call Me Maybe' or one of their other amazing songs — it lightens the mood and gets the people going!"

The GIs got their day in the sun when www.ryanseacrest.com posted a link to their video on July 2.

Should graduations return to the Grape Bowl?

Lodi Unified leaders are moving Lodi and Tokay high school graduations from the Grape Bowl to the Spanos Center at UOP in Stockton. They cite limited seating, costs and unpredictable weather at the Grape Bowl. But others say graduations at the Grape Bowl are an important Lodi tradition, and one reason many supported renovating the stadium. What do you think?
