I would personally like to thank “Every Woman Counts” for providing the free mammogram that detected breast cancer in my friend. “Every Woman Counts” is a program that provides free mammograms and cervical cancer screenings to low-income and uninsured women through a federally and state funded program.

My friend found a suspicious lump but didn’t know how she could afford a mammogram, since the programs that had offered it previously were no longer around. She had kept quiet about it for quite a while, but the lump seemed to be getting bigger. After she shared her concern with me, I found this website on the Internet, and that night I called 800-511-2300 (DHCS Homepage) and left my phone number and a message.

The next morning my call was returned from someone at “Every Woman Counts.” I was given several numbers that did free clinical breast exams in our area.

My friend had an appointment within the week and received the heart-wrenching suspected diagnosis: “Breast cancer detected.” She is now scheduled to meet with the surgeon. We pray her cancer was caught in time and wish she had gone in earlier.

Women, please have any suspicious breast lumps screened for cancer ASAP and spare you, family and friends from heartaches that may have been avoided.

To find out if you qualify, call “Every Woman Counts” at 800-511-2300.
