When one election ends, the next one begins

I would like to add a little bit to the letter by John Herrick, "We must cut spending to bring down the debt," Nov. 17.

Sorry, folks, my father used to say, "The best you'll likely get in a politician is a C-minus." That was many years ago, and it has only become worse with time. To say that our politicians are only thinking about getting re-elected is an understatement. The next national and even state election started the day after the elections.

Why is there so much money spent on the elections? The spenders want someone's ear, and they think that the more they spend, the more often they get to speak to that particular ear. The politicians aren't listening to us, just the big spenders! Why do you think Gov. Brown is so determined to get a bullet train? Lobbyists! Why do you think he is the same way for shipping our water (and ruining the Delta in the process) to the southern part of the state? Same reason.

Why can't politicians understand that there simply isn't enough water here for there!? They would be far better off — and I think spend less money — to get a group of engineers and water people together to design a couple of desalinization plants for Southern California. I would bet they could use solar energy for a significant portion of power needs. Would anyone think of that possibility? Not on your life. They think they can just power up the current canal system and take what they want.

And the reasons businesses are leaving the state are legion!

The list of stuff that really needs attention is significant, but the elected are worrying about getting re-elected and making sure that they aren't subject to the laws that aren't convenient for themselves, such as health care and pension reform. We are going to have to get really mad and let them know how we feel before there is much action.
