This is in response to Jerry Osgood’s letter, “Capitalism has ups, downs; socialism just gets worse,” responding to my letter “Capitalism proves wealth distribution works,” Jan. 11, responding to his letter to the editor, “Redistribution of wealth has never worked,” on Jan. 7.

He says I failed to do my homework, even though I have a college degree. Does the following list of books I have read or referenced count as homework?

“America Beyond Capitalism,” by Gar Alperovitz; “Socialism: Past and Future,” by Michael Harrington; “Looting of America,” by Les Leopold; “How Walmart is Destroying America (and the World),” by Bill Quinn; “Stayin’ Alive: The 1970s and the Last Days of the Working Class,” and “Capital Moves: RCA’s Seventy Year Quest for Cheap Labor,” both by Jefferson Cowie; “Conservatives Without Conscience,” by John W. Dean; “Where the Right Went Wrong,” by Pat Buchanan; “Boiling Point,” and “American Theocracy,” both by Kevin Phillips; “Opposing the System,” by Charles Reich; “Losing Our Democracy,” by Mark Green; “This Land is Their Land,” “Nickel and Dimed” and “Bait and Switch,” all by Barbara Ehrenreich; and the King James version of the “Holy Bible,” by God.

And this is only a partial list, but it should suffice for now to emphasize my awareness of what’s really going on in this country. Or have the foregoing writers failed to do their homework as well?

To be fair and honest, I also read right-wing works as well, including Rush Limbaugh’s diatribes, and I do side with his anti-abortion stance — if nothing much else.

As I have said before in previous letters, I am neither left- nor right-wing. I have risen above all of that. America needs a new perspective.
