Our community is so fortunate to have an organization like PALS — People Assisting Lodi Shelter — a nonprofit group that works tirelessly to provide homeless dogs and cats with a second chance at life. Each day offers many challenges, but one of the greatest ones is raising the needed funds for daily animal care plus the large costs of necessary medical and surgical services and medications for the animals who might otherwise be euthanized.

I am hoping that PALS will be remembered as we approach the holiday season. There are a few ways the community can help.

One is to attend the elegant PALS Christmas gala, "Coats and Tails, A Formal Affair," on Dec. 8 at the Lodi Woman's Club. More information can be obtained by calling the PALS office at 209-224-0354 or on the PALS website, www.palslodi.org.

When doing holiday shopping, please remember that lovely bargains are available at the PALS shop, Wags to Riches, 101 E. Pine St., phone 209-367-9247. Also, donations are always appreciated and volunteers are welcomed.

And, as importantly, please remember to contact PALS when looking to adopt a dog or cat. We have many sweet animals who would enjoy spending the holidays in the comfort of a warm, loving home rather than behind the bars of a cold cage.

The support of our community is very essential and appreciated in saving the lives of our many orphaned animals. Please help PALS and the wonderful animals in need.
