Tax code changes are long overdue

Hats off to Sens. Max Baucus, D-Mont., and Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, who are trying to simplify our horrendous tax code. The purpose of the income tax should be to raise revenue, not a bloated agency forcing social change on Americans with special exemptions and tax credits to promote what Congress wants us to do.

With all the scandals, it is time to simplify the code. Businesses and individuals spend a fortune in time and money complying with a tax code and its myriad regulations, which no one understands. It cost a major contributor of Romney $75,000 for IRS audits which found nothing wrong. After spending $50 million on lavish conferences, the IRS now wants to pay its employees $17 million in bonuses when so many citizens are looking for jobs or being cut back to 30 hours a week. Just recently, the IRS asked for another billion to hire 4,500 new agents.

The IRS targeted Tea Party and patriotic groups over 501(c)4 exemptions. Without the exemption, those groups could not raise money in the 2012 election. True the Vote founder Catherine Engelbrecht and her family were subject to personal and business IRS audits, and her small family business received visits from the ATF — twice — and OSHA. The Tea Party group she founded was visited several times by the FBI — all because a courageous woman became an active citizen fighting for election integrity.

The IRS wastes so much money in fraudulent tax refunds. The Earned Income Credit is rife with fraud. Electronic filing has created huge identity theft fraud. IRS paid out phony refunds, and when the legitimate taxpayer files, he goes through grief to get his legitimate refund. Currently waste is about $50 million sent to multiple persons filing from the same address. Wouldn’t you think it would be suspicious to see 23 persons filing for large refunds from the same address?

And the IRS is to handle Obamacare? God help this country! It’s time to change our tax system!

I couldn't agree more (can you believe it?) and they should start with the Barack H. Obama Foundation.
The IRS had fast-tracked a charity run by Obama’s half-brother, Abon’go “Roy” Malik Obama, for tax-exempt approval.
The charity is named after the Obama brothers’ Kenyan dad, Barack H. Obama, Sr. Its mission statement is “to provide people everywhere with resources to uplift their welfare and living standards in memory of Barack H. Obama: in the region of his birth, Kenya, and beyond.”
The offical "address" is a mailbox at a UPS store. Further investigation reveals that the "charity" is fraudulent and donations apparently benefit Abon'go.
I am still waiting for the liberals to reveal NAMES of liberal organizations the IRS targeted. After all, Obozo claimed they did, should be no problem listing them, eh?

For once I agree with Bobbin, and the main pretender resides at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington D.C.

There are a plethora of LIBERAL biased "non-profit" organizations that make no secret of their support for liberal politicians and the progressive agenda. Of course, liberals fail to mention their side, only bemoan the conservative side. Apparently the IRS scandal is starting to warm up the Oval Office a bit? About time.

Got the clarification I was looking for. Yup, I was right.

Doesn't matter is the 501(c)4 is campaigning, lobbying or fighting one side of the political spectrum or the other as long as they can prove they are meeting their primary community activism.

But I am getting clarification on my last statement.

Just to split hairs here, the tax code DOES permit groups like Lodi Citizens in Action to operate AS a not for profit. Being a 501(c)4 does not prohibit a group from acting politically. Even permits them to lobby, some.

Speaking as someone who lives with the NFP tax code I get to hear all the tests and new regulations/enforcements as they come out for the past 15 years. If a group was acting in violation of their 501c's then all sorts of bells go off.

501(c)4 tax exemptions are a joke - just look at our local "Lodi Citizens in Action."

Why do they need to be tax exempt? They are obviously VERY partisan - luckily the proof is in all of the partisan comments and columns published in this newspaper.

The IRS needs to shake all of these phonies out of the tax-exempt bushes ASAP.

Tea party groups are not tax exempt because they have a political agenda. They can raise all the funds they want they just need to pay taxes or disclose donors to pretend otherwise is disingenuous.

FYI to Ms. Roche. Evil people pretend to be the friend of the American public - but only THEIR kind of American public.

Catherine Engelbrecht only wants HER kind of people to be able to vote and wants all others to be prevented from voting.

Voter intimidation is her and her organization's MO. And she's complaining that SHE has been intimidated by the IRS and the ATF? Her claims, no substantiation except from her backers.

Ross Farrow is dead? I guess I missed that. Lodi is poorer without him. :(
