Letter: We all need to conserve water — and we should build more reservoirs, too

Water is a resource that belongs to us all. It drives me crazy to drive around on rainy days and see sprinklers watering the lawns. People have to be more responsible and turn off sprinklers during rain and winter. It is everyone’s job to conserve water, not just the guy down the street.

By my letter you can figure out that I am a conservative Republican. Cathleen Galgiani, a Democrat, has some good ideas to increase water storage. Southern California has gone way ahead of us on water storage.

We are always going to have droughts, and this water system was not designed for 38 million, let alone 50 million.

I support her ideas, and then some. We should build the Auburn dam, and not build the tunnels or the bullet train. Perhaps Jerry Brown could fill the bullet trains with water to deliver our water to his Southern California. His way of paying them back for electing him three times, and maybe a fourth.

I agree saving water is everyone's responsibility. I have not ran my sprinklers since October. My wash cycle for clothes is always the shortest cycle (you would be surprised how many gallons that saves in a family of 5). My car will go months without getting washed.

We are even looking into replacing our grass in the back yard with synthetic grass for the water conservation (and my wife hates the splotchy look since I don't water often).

One more thing I believe the State of California needs to do is invest in restoring, building and operating the desalinization platforms off the coast. In the future those platforms may save the California economy by offsetting water to the farmers.
