I recently read an article in the Lodi News-Sentinel dated Jan. 4, regarding the Lodi City Council discussing changes to the Fourth of July celebration at Lodi Lake. Once again, they are wanting to take back Lodi Lake and charge an entry fee.

I remember growing up in Lodi in the ‘60s, as my family moved here in 1958. We would be awakened very early by the sounds of boat motors revving up their engines and getting ready for their race on the Fourth of July. The entire town would anxiously await going to Lodi Lake for the annual Kawanis pancake breakfast and the boat races.

The day would be spent by families enjoying the day together picnicking. Friends would meet to watch the boat races and just get reacquainted with one another, staying until after the fireworks late at night. There was no fee to get into the lake and no vendors selling their goods, other than the snack bar that was usually open by the boat rentals. The entire lake was free and opened to all who wanted to spend the day.

I know things change throughout the years, but why do we always want to charge for a day that has always been free, open and enjoyed by all? If the city wants to make money on a holiday that has been free to all, bring back the boat races and charge an entry fee to the boat competitors. Now that’s the Lodi I remember and loved.
