Letter: There should have been some other solution

I am writing this letter because I am very concerned about the recent shooting of Parminder Singh Shergill by two Lodi police officers. I’m wondering why they didn’t Tase him or call for a canine unit? Why so hasty to shoot? Two police officers against one man with a knife? Why not take him down some other way?

I thought the police were supposed to “protect and serve” us. That is why we pay taxes. Mr. Shergill wasn’t protected, and to me he was a victim of a “shoot first and ask questions later” action.

I also think that the police investigations are a sham. There should always be an independent outside investigation whenever a shooting has occurred.

Shame Obama doesn't get the same consideration in innocent until proven guilty.

Leavnes, perhaps you should be a part of that team of outside investagators. While the jury is still out and nothing released from the PD, the officers are considered innocent until proven otherwise. These officers were not just out of school, they had time in and until they tell their side of the shooting, take a break. With all the question coming from after the fact, you have to put yourself in their shoes. Since there had been trouble at that location before, the family might have taken a different approach to solving the problem. Living not far from the shooting, I have seen the person in question sitting on a park bench smoking, the first time I passed him I said hello, it was like I was not even there since all I got was a blank stear. A dog, a taser, or even using a baton might have solved the problem, however, why the officers used their weapons is a question only they can answer.
