School is out for the summer, but children will be returning in late July. We want students to be prepared and ready to learn. It is not uncommon for students to show up on the first day of school with holes in their shoes and well-worn shirts and pants. And when the weather turns cold, many students do not have warm jackets.

With the help of the community, Lodi Adopt-A-Child holds an annual back-to-school clothing giveaway that provides disadvantaged elementary school students with three pairs of school pants, three polo shirts, a warm sweatshirt, socks, underwear and new shoes. We purchase the clothing wholesale and distribute it to students at the Lodi Adopt-A-Child office and a Lodi Unified School District elementary school.

Four hundred students with school clothing needs are annually identified with the assistance of Lodi Unified’s teachers and staff. The cost of Lodi Adopt-A-Child for this annual undertaking is approximately $28,000, or $70 per student.

We are asking the community to open your hearts and pocketbooks to help by making a contribution for school clothing for students. A well-dressed child returning to school sends the message, “I am prepared and here to learn!” You may send your donation to Lodi Adopt-A-Child, P.O. Box 2479, Lodi, CA 95241.

Thank you and God bless you.

That said, this letter certainly does make Mr Viall's priorities clear. If only he loved his country as much as he loves his party.
