The 66-year-old Rio Vista Bass Derby is an old dog with a terrific new trick.
Who knows, maybe the derby has been rolling over for years, but we want to throw them a bone because this idea is new to us:
Instead of a prize for the biggest fish, tournament organizers set a good sized target for contestants to hit. The grand prize went to the angler who hauled in a striper closest to 32.5 inches.
The point is to encourage shaking loose the big, spawning females that play a pivotal role in restoring the fishery.
“Attaboy,” to everyone responsible.
