What a hoot to see local boy-turned-Hollywood actor Ross Thomas featured in a major film recently.

The young man from Woodbridge is in "Soul Surfer," based on the true story of shark attack survivor Bethany Hamilton. Thomas played her older brother, Noah. The role seems a natural for Thomas, who grew up wakeboarding in the Delta and snowboarding at Lake Tahoe.

Since graduating from the University of Southern California, Thomas has acted in several films, including "What's Bugging Seth?," "The Cutting Edge 2: Going for the Gold," and "American Pie: The Naked Mile."

We have a feeling the best is yet to come for the talented Ross Thomas.

The same can be said for another local fellow made good, David Cooper. The former Tokay High baseball phenom was called up to the Toronto Blue Jays recently, after smashing the cover off the ball for a AAA club in Las Vegas.

Cooper, 24, got his first major league hit in Yankee Stadium last Sunday.

Off the baseball diamond, Cooper has a reputation as grounded and likable.

We're looking forward to his continuing success.
