There’s no sense in Gary Hickey’s continuing his quest for the San Joaquin County district attorney’s office.

His personal challenges should be his top priority. He’s had multiple run-ins with the law and drinking has been a factor in most of them.

These include a disturbing the peace arrest in 1991 (case dismissed), a 1998 State Bar disciplinary action, a 2013 hit-and-run accident (Hickey pled “in abeyance” and agreed to restitution for a damaged phone pole), a January 2014 allegation now before the State Bar that he was drunk in court and misrepresented his client, an April DUI arrest and an arrest last week for being drunk in public.

He should not mislead voters about his fitness to be the county’s top criminal prosecutor. He is not fit for this or any other public office.

Instead, he should face his private demons.

We didn’t set down this litany to embarrass Hickey. The fact is, we wish him well and hope that away from the spotlight, he can put his life back together. Hickey may think we’re urging him to be a quitter. That’s not it at all.

In our opinion, stepping back from the DA’s race would be an act of bravery — one that puts his priorities right and produces the best results for himself and the voters.
