The statues were fun while they lasted

We'll miss the Downtown statues.

They weren't popular with everyone. Our own Marc Lutz called them "creepy." But we'd use words like "whimsical" and "artful." The art, to us, is like Andy Warhol's Campbell's Soup label — art in the form of the everyday and the overlooked.

A window washer, a jogger and young man playing guitar. Why not celebrate life as it's lived?

Seward Johnson's bronzes were exactly life-size and detailed realistically enough to cause double-takes and even shock. Then smiles.

Was it worth the $30,000 rental fee?

It's hard to put a price on fun, but 50 cents per citizen doesn't seem outrageous.
