Stu Cabe, entertainer and anti-bullying guru, is coming to Galt.

By most accounts, Cabe is a funny, charismatic guy who enthralls students and adults alike.

Galt Joint Union High School District trustees voted this week to bring Cabe to Galt and Liberty Ranch high schools. Cabe will present his "Breaking Down the Walls" program, which includes assemblies and workshops.

Cabe's website describes a fellow of unique talents and background. He holds degrees in both education and drama and has spoken to dozens of school audiences across the country and in Canada. He also, by the way, rides a unicycle, restores classic cars and juggles.

Cabe is a popular speaker and he doesn't come cheap: He'll be paid $13,000 for his visit. Part of his fees will be paid from district funds, and a portion from the Galt High Associated Student Body.

Everyone is concerned about public spending these days, so of course we are prepared to ask the question:

Is the multi-talented Mr. Cabe worth the money?

Well, the answer might very well be "yes." One of Cabe's websites trumpets better attendance and lower disciplinary issues following his visits to some schools.

In the parlance of public school education, ADA means average daily attendance — which stands for money.

So if a few hours of inspirational talk by Stu Cabe can decrease absenteeism or truancy, and increase ADA, those high-priced moments may be a bargain.

A mild grump, and then a suggestion.

Grump: The stats Cabe includes on his website are a bit on the sketchy side. In this era of relentless bang-for-the-buckism, he would do himself and the schools that hire him a service by offering more complete data on his successes.

Suggestion: Galt and Liberty Ranch High administrators measure the results of Mr. Cabe's upcoming events with concrete numbers.

It's nice to hear inspirational messages about respect and maturity. It's important to save money in these tight fiscal times.

Here's hoping the inimitable Mr. Cabe can do both.
