Do we need further restrictions on guns? The debate is raging after the school massacre in Newtown, Conn. Proponents and opponents each cite studies and have strong arguments. Without suggesting any specific course, we've collected 10 things to consider that we thought might help shed light on the issue.

1. The U.S. has 5 percent of the world's population and 50 percent of the guns, according to the Washington Post.

2. According to FBI statistics, cited in an analysis by the Christian Science Monitor, violent crime, including gun crimes, dropped dramatically in 2009 while gun sales increased at least 12 percent.

3. Firearms were used in 68 percent of murders in 2011, according to the FBI.

4. Mother Jones magazine tracked every shooting spree in the U.S. over the last three decades and found that in most cases, the killers obtained the weapons legally.

5. Two studies published in The New England Journal of Medicine showed that keeping a gun in the home increases the risk of both suicide and homicide. Keeping a gun in the home makes it 2.7 times more likely that someone will be a victim of homicide in the home. In almost all cases, the victim is either related to or intimately acquainted with the murderer.

6. A machine gun is an automatic weapon. Automatic weapons fire when you pull the trigger, and keep firing until you release the trigger. A machine gun can normally fire between 400 and 1,000 rounds (bullets) per minute, or between 7 and 17 rounds per second. But machine guns are uncommon and expensive, and their ownership is tightly controlled.

7. A semi-automatic weapon, like the Bushmaster that was reportedly the primary weapon in the Newtown massacre, requires you to pull the trigger for each shot. A single shot weapon requires you to reload, cock or pump the new load each time. Almost every gun that shoots is semi-automatic, according to a primer on guns prepared by the Poynter Institute for journalists.

8. Defining "assault weapon" is difficult, and there is no technical definition. Generally, assault weapons reflect military-style characteristics, such as a forward pistol grip, bayonet mount, folding stock or the capacity to hold more than 10 rounds.

9. California has a law banning assault weapons, considered one of the most restrictive in the nation. Some speculate it will be used as a model for the federal ban being drafted by U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein.

10. In the U.S., the gun-related homicide rate is 30 times that of France or Australia, according to the U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime. It is 12 times higher than the average for other developed countries. But the U.S. rate is below those of Guatemala, Paraguay, Zimbabwe, Mexico, Costa Rica, Belarus, and Barbados.

It all comes down to this. Do you want to have the best weapon you can to protect your life and family? Or do you realy think that by dialing (911) you will scare off the bad guys? Many actualy think that yes, the authorities will protect them! LOL. We need to once again teach self reliance in face or crisis that could involve your very life or others. This dependence on authorities to solve and rescue you from danger has to stop! Do take matters into your own hands and act, DO not hesitate and think that picking up that phone and handing over your problems to others is going to work. Look at what has happened? Many call the police when they hear loud music instead of at least talking first. No wonder the police are overwhelmed with service calls. Half of them are things best resolved yourself. Dont think that (it will never happen to you) Think it might and be prepared to do what ever it takes to protect yourself and others.

The weapon this nut case used in the murders at Sandy Hook was the Bushmaster. What they retrieved from the trunk was a shotgun he brought but left in the car. The liberal gun hating press are apparently too ignorant to tell the difference from a Bushmaster 223 and a shotgun. They believe in the motto, "Never let a good crisis go to waste" in their efforts to destroy the 2nd Amendment.

I guess I would have felt better if I could have pulled an Abrams tank out of my garage. I guess I was thinking if they were armed they were probably going to try to catch me off guard being 3 in the morning. But making it known that I was there, aware of their presences I was in a position to catch them off guard and the ability to be pro-active instead of being on the defense. At this point they had no way of knowing how many people were in my home or home many/how much guns and ammo that I had available at that time.

    CBS is CBS.

If you wish to remain in a self perpetuating corporate media induced trance it's not MY fault.

I am curious Sunny... It has been stated that equal fire power is not important in situations like you described. In your opinion, would these bikers have been motivated to leave your property if they had been armed with "Bushmaster AR-15 assault-type weapons and you a single shot 22 rifle?

I think you should have the right to defend yourself with weapons that are at least as lethal as what the bad guys have. What do you think?

As with every tragedy that takes place in America these days, it didn't take long for liberals to advance their political agenda. It is refreshing to read posts like Andrews where facts are the focus as opposed to the typical emotional based drivel liberals love to base their decisions on.

    Good job Andrew!

Once again, Mr. Adams chooses to struggle with the facts and digresses into his usual ad hominem nonsense.[rolleyes]

Suggesting that Connecticut State Police Lt. Paul Vance didn’t say, “The primary weapon used in the attack was a "Bushmaster AR-15 assault-type weapon” and instead is a “conspiracy” defies logic.

In reality, Lt. Paul Vance did make the statement and the Medical Examiner did say, "All the wounds I know of at this point were cause by the long weapon."

As a matter of fact, on Sun, Dec 16, 2012 you, yourself, shared the following video Mike (see below) and made the false claim that the video came “Straight from infowars:” Did you not?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqY9Xvr0Ts8

When I pointed out to you the fact that the video you provided “was straight from CBS News not infowars” you said, “That's odd. I wonder why you would say it's from CBS?”

Once again Mike, The CBS News Special Report aired on 12/14 on CBS and clearly shows officials removing a "Bushmaster AR-15 assault-type weapon”or “long weapon."

Despite what the mainstream media, politicians and talking heads have been saying, the fact of the matter is this, a “Bushmaster AR-15 assault-type weapon” or “long weapon” NEVER left the trunk of the car!

Hardly a “conspiracy theory” as evidenced by the video that you yourself provided.

" As with every tragedy that takes place in America these days, it didn't take long for "truthers," racists, and other fringe people to concoct conspiracy theories about the Sandy Hook massacre — myths that would be laughable if they weren't so offensive.

The most prominent concoction getting attention right now is the claim made by Press TV, the official state media outlet of Iran, that the massacre was actually the work of an Israeli death squad sent to America to punish President Obama for his lack of loyalty. Even worse, the implication is that the president would rather "take the punishment" and cover up this supposed deadly raid than defy his Jewish supporters or embarrass the state Israel. This story obviously plays on the worst fears of those who believe in secret Jewish cabals that run the world, but it's a pretty pathetic attempt at slander, even for Iran."

Simon Birch: Is this OK? Does this offend you? I'm surprised you believe that plagiarism is acceptable, but the honest, truthful evaluation of a prolific poster, whose letters you have published were completely and totally stolen from other sources is OK. It's the likes of him (and his appraisal of the LNS as a "local rag") that keep decent people away. Maybe you should spend a little more time following up on his plagiarism than reviewing my posts.
My family (and me) have only subscribed to your paper for over 50 years.
Maybe we need to re-evaluate our relationship?

See? In less than a week, it's now a big conspiracy!!

I better tune in to you tube to get all the latest, unfiltered, information I can get on a serious news event, because as every normal person knows, you tube always has the truth.

Maybe the ignorant rantings of any weirdo will replace facts in all stories in the future. We won't need newspapers and responsible media because we have seriously ill people reporting what they've read on the internet or heard on conspiracy radio shows.

I suppose it wouldn’t make a difference to someone who is able to ignore the fact that Connecticut State Police Lt. Paul Vance, the Medical Examiner and the mainstream media have been perpetuating a falsehood.

Not everyone and their situations are the same. I live in Acampo towards highway 88. My husband was gone out of state for work. I was home alone with the kids, at 3:am I heard a motorcycle on my property (20 acres). I called 911 and they asked for my address and what was the emergency. I told the dispatch officer, She asked me If I had a gun. I told her yes. She said that was a good thing because the estimated time of arrival for an officer to come to my place was 25-35 minutes. I heard the motorcycle get closer and closer to the house and slow down. I opened a window and fired 2 warning shots in the air, they got on their motorcycle and fled. I may have saved my life and the lives of my 4 children that night. You're not going to take our rifles or my hand gun. Yes they all have child locks on them and are hidden from them.

The average mass media mentally manipulated moron is unable to digest the fact that neither a “Bushmaster AR-15 assault-type weapon” or “long weapon” ever left the trunk of Lanza's car.
