Lodi schools are considering allowing student athletes to waive a portion of their physical education classes.

It's long overdue.

Students who participate in team sports should not have to forgo an academic class in order to fulfill a physical education requirement.

Of course, PE is an enriching experience, but so are higher math, science, literature, art and music.

Athletes can gain much more from extra study time or additional academic exposure than the minimalist "life instruction" given in most P.E. classes.

The Galt schools have found a way to satisfy the state of California and expose their athletes to the extra classroom time.

The Lodi instructors and administrators studying this idea can surely find a way.
