Editorial: Time to pump our fists

Lodians can take their hands off the bars and pump their fists in victory. Hosting Stage 2 of the Amgen Tour of California was triumphant from start to finish.

The crowds were voluminous and festive. The course, managed by pros but assisted by a dozens of volunteers, was well controlled and as safe as a bike race course can be — the cyclists only crashed into each other, not into spectators, dogs or cross traffic.

The donors were generous and the publicity was seamlessly managed. There were leaders, of course — Bob Colarossi of Estate Crush, Nancy Beckman of Visit Lodi!, Pat Patrick of the Chamber and Cameron King and the staff of the Lodi-Woodbridge Winegrape Commission.

And some of those leaders are pretty good cyclists who really appreciate this exotic sport — City Manager Steve Schwabauer, Parks and Rec. Director Jeff Hood and Joseph Lange of LangeTwins Winery.

But that sizable crowd and the legion of committees, course marshals, wine servers and clerks, seemed to have done their homework and learned, overnight, to appreciate a sport that thrives in Europe but is just coming into its own over here.

“We didn’t have one chief sponsor or one person who wanted this to happen,” Lange told the News-Sentinel. “It took all of Lodi, and we did it.”

It was a heck of a finishing sprint.
