The melancholy sound of a dobro slide guitar and Lodi Lake’s weeping willows rustling in the Delta breeze made a soulful duet last Saturday afternoon.
The Bluegrass at the Lake event showcased the wisdom of combining the city’s arts and culture efforts with parks and recreation. The event worked because the music appeals to Lodi’s American roots, and Lodi Lake Park is a municipal wonderment.
Congratulations to Jeff Hood, Jennifer Winn, Deannie Bridewell, Mark Hamilton and the others who chose the talent and sold them on Lodi Lake.
The 500 of us who took the afternoon to slow down and listen won’t soon forget the first time we heard Hattie Craven sing or Avram Frankel play dobro. Snap Jackson and his Knock on Wood Band have twice filled the auditorium at Hutchins Street Square, but we can’t wait to hear them again at the lake.
This first Bluegrass at Lodi Lake may be the last one that has ample seating.
