We don't know how the horrific allegations involving former Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky will proceed.

We only know this: We must all be advocates for children.

Some workers, including teachers, doctors and nurses, law enforcement and clergy members, are mandated to report child abuse — or face prosecution.

Yet it is our collective responsibility to protect children. All of us. We can't protect a friend, a co-worker, even a spouse if it means abuse against children may continue. We must step up.

So as the emotions and accusations roil and rage at Penn State, let's pause. This can be a learning moment.

If you see or suspect child abuse, the advice from Lodi detectives is clear and simple: Call your local police department.
