With new blood comes new ideas. Getting the approval of established values is the challenge. Knowing history and bringing it current are the new generations to come. Hanging on to old values at the same time makes it that much more meaningful.

Knowing the purposes of teaching and the sharing of personal memories welcomes the future with open arms. Sounds like your experiences were good ones Mr. Hansen and Mr. Kinderman.
As nervous as I was to sing in the eighth grade Christmas choir it was one of many eye opening experiences for me to march into the future head on.
Funny - the things you remember.

With so little information about the direction of the play, I'm left wondering just why the principal indicated that a firing was in the offing. Depending on what year this was going on, from what was revealed here I couldn't think of any reason why it might be offensive.

I recall our Christmas pageant during my last year at the school for poor, male orphans in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; that would have been the Christmas of 1973. We upped the ante quite a bit ourselves that year - and had a whole lot of fun doing it. It's been a long time since that performance (39 years to be almost exact), but my best friend Vince played the angel tasked with notifying the Shepherds watching their flocks with a bellowing, "Hey youse guys!!" (Philadelphia accents weren't all that attractive then and I doubt much has changed.

Still, the music and drama teachers weren't called onto the carpet for what turned out to be an enjoyable evening for all concerned and I know for a fact they held on to their jobs for several years following. For me, I just smile a little when thinking about it.

And perhaps that was just the point Mr. Hansen was trying to convey.
