The U.S. Census is nearly as old as the nation, but it wasn't until 2000 that I really began to understand what it can tell us about where we live.

That year, I went on the Internet and pulled down data about our community and discovered what a large percentage of people in the Lodi area come from Mexico.

The 2010 Census says that trend is continuing.

Of Lodi's population of 62,134 people, 22,613 are Latino or Hispanic and 20,579 say they are of Mexican descent. The growth in Hispanic residents — 7,153 — exceeds the growth in Lodi's total population — 5,141.

The table that accompanies this short piece contains a lot to think about.

Lodi is growing a little slower than California as a whole, but Galt is growing like topsy. It's gone from a village of less than 9,000 in 1990 to a small city of 37,029.

Although Americans filled out their census forms almost two years ago, some of the results are only now being published.

We are going to keep an eye on www.census.gov and bring you little tidbits about the greater Lodi area in the year ahead.

Stay tuned.
