President Obama's re-election chances dim as immigration continues

If I were President Barack Obama's advisor, I would tell him that after only 10 months in office, his reelection prospects are fading.

Obama's campaign rhetoric, especially about creating five million jobs, got him to the White House. But his aimless Jobs Summit, with all of its empty words and unfulfilled promises, doesn't fool anyone. Ominously, the summit excluded critics.

Since Obama took office in January, unemployment has steadily risen from 7.6 to its current level of 10.2 percent. The Federal Reserve predicts that the rate will stay above 8 percent until 2012, a level once considered disastrous. Accordingly, now is the time for action — not posturing.

Obama's easiest way out of his employment crisis may be the hardest for him: Effective immediately, Congress must impose an immigration moratorium.

Incredibly, despite the shocking statistic that nearly 16 million Americans are jobless, the Department of Homeland Security acknowledges that the federal government issues 75,000 permanent work permits a month to foreign-born nationals.

Annualized, that's more than one million foreign-born people arriving in the United States to compete with unemployed Americans for scarce jobs.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics announced that in October alone, Americans lost 190,000 jobs. Yet in October, 75,000 foreign-born people received permanent work permits to directly compete with Americans for jobs. This is an outrage of such magnitude that it defies description.

Despite the recession, more than 100,000 legal immigrants enter the country every month. They come from winning diversity lottery spots or through chain migration. Many immediately seek employment.

As recently as last spring, according to the Pew Hispanic Center, eight million illegal aliens held jobs. Only four percent of them were in agriculture.

USA Today reported that the situation is so grave that unemployed Americans turn up in large numbers at day labor centers. Observers calculate that American-born workers at job centers formerly frequented by illegal aliens have doubled during the last two years.

At the Jobs Summit, Obama heard solutions that will cost billions but have no assurance of success.

The Economic Policy Institute recommends spending $120 billion over three years.

New York Times columnist and Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman recommends a multi-billion dollar jobs program similar to the ones in Franklin Delano Roosevelt's New Deal.

Here are more statistics to consider: Last month, Obama's administration claimed that 640,000 jobs were saved or created by his $787 billion stimulus program. Many feel the estimate is inflated. Even if it isn't, that works out to a $1.2 million cost to taxpayers per job. And the announcement didn't mention that more than seven million people have lost jobs since the start of the December 2007 recession.

Under the administration's irresponsible immigration policy, many of those jobs created could have gone to foreign-born workers. Think of it: billions of stimulus dollars spent that might mean employment for immigrants.

Under my immigration moratorium solution, however, job creation would cost zero. Not one dime of your tax dollars would be needed to put Americans back to work.

If you're in the job market today, your prospects are terrible. There are six times as many Americans seeking work as there are openings. The average duration of unemployment is more than six months, the highest level since the 1930s.

An immigration moratorium is such an obvious beginning for putting Americans back to work that you might wonder why it isn't a top priority.

An answer: Federal immigration policy is on auto-pilot. No matter what the economic or social considerations may be, immigration grinds on.

Lodian- When liberals can't answer the question, especially since it reveals the truth they often resort to name calling. Does this shoe fit? I am not annoyed by your assertion, since in the context of objective science the *ism is a meaningless term conjured in the minds of control freaks.Everyone does not need to be a Vegan, wear sandals, have an ambiguous sexuality, eat granola, smoke dope (medicinal herb?), and worship the holy one; Barry Sotelo, or support these cult behaviors. I am certified "non racist" by Sven something or other who tries, but can not convince. There is NO such thing as race, these undefined distinctions are cultural. Try to tell Tiger who he is? Thats a liberal game of control over people of different cultures. Libs always bring up the non-subject of "race". Why?Please let me know what blood test you will use to define me. You can't, because all human blood is red. It appears that YOU may be projecting? Reaction Formation?Sorry, but you can't pigeon hole me in your progressive welfare control schema.

Aren't you curious about his academic acheivements?Even George, "The Chimp" Bush allowed the public to view his lousy grades. He admitted his daddy got him in to Yale via the Skull and Bones fraternity."The Barry" never appeared on any Occidental honor roll list. Just how did he manage to pass thousands of students with excellent test scores and academic achievements and get admitted from a third rank California college?Hhmm ---was it his grades? NO!..he would have bragged about them for his "qualifications", his scholarship? same answers. His test scores...we better not go there! I don't see his name listed on any High IQ society membership lists. What does that mean? The Clintons wore their credentials on their sleeves. They should be proud THEY EARNED THEM! Bushie---cheated all through life and daddy got him the plum job. But Barry? I would love to get a copy of his LSAT scores or state bar results. How many times did he have to take the state bar exam to pass?

Rhodie- Be very careful about those ads! What benefit do THEY receive? We all know that the following are rife with fraudsters: used car salesmen, work-at-home scams, real estate, developers, commercial property managment, late night TV flipper guru shows (real estate again), bankers, investment counselors and stock brokers(any salesman on commish), and of course fly-by-night gold bug cheerleaders. If a thief/con-artist who is selling Real estate gets caught, whats next? Mortgage loans, refinance, life insurance, annuities, investment opportunities and Gold promotion! Most scam Gold promoters will NOT SELL YOU actual GOLD metal, but will offer to "store it for you" - like the game the banksters play. Want a photo of YOUR gold? Reminds me of the MLS! Research coin collectors and look for non-collectible Gold coins. Many charge a premium above the gold metal value---forget those-unless you are a coin collector. Stick with the dirty coins such as Mexican one and two pesos. These are well accepted for the value of the metal ONLY. They are easy to assay and if you have them tested first they are a good choice. Watch out for Tungsten fakes!

Rhodie--Hedge with Gold bullion, but the price may be too high today. I see $3,000/ounce as a possibility. If you bought at $275/oz in 2000, you would have a 400% increase without paying property taxes, insurance or interest. Now try that with a house! Gold over the long haul will easily reach $5,000/ounce. We are printing dollars faster than GNP, that forces dollar values DOWN.

Rhodie re your comment about selling assets. Would you say that a person who cashed out of the stock market the first week of Oct 2007 was a loser? The facts is that most everyone who did not is still negative on their investments. I completely liquidated 0ct 6 2007. The crashes never touched me. So in this case, you are a LOSER if you use the "Buy and hold" strategy. You have to remember the disclaimer "Past performance is not indicative of future gains".We will have a huge USA crash before June 2010. Its easy to predict. The problems include: Will other large countries crash first? Will we be in another war? When will Obama be FORCED into nationalizing his "first" large bank? The fastest way to recovery is to immediatley start seizing poor performing banks, restructuring them and break up the megalopoly of banksters. The USA has too many small banks and a few monster banks. The monster banks must be broken into smaller banks. Will next year be the year? I see a large market crash and/or bank run either way.

Rhodie- "...you only lose money when you sell.."? That sounds like Realtor talk. I get my equity back when I sell, thats why it can be an investment. The day of closing on a sale is a big day for me, since I can finally collect more cash profits. IT IS NOT A PROFIT sitting in a house. Also, the MINUTE you get a mortgage of any kind, its the DAY YOU LOSE. Thats why they invented the prepayment penalty---not only do they want interest, but dozens of junkk fees to fill the pot. How do they get away with this? We let them, because it is NOT OUR MONEY. If it is YOUR money, tell them if they talk, you walk. Its all about black and red ink. Do you want red ink in brackets or do you want black ink in bold numbers. Its always your choice. Just don't buy into the lies. You will always be the one in debt--not them. There are 3/2/2 SFR asking 50% of some vacant buildable lots....and they aren't selling. What does that tell you?

T&C- Great information. I KNOW a person who is not in this country legally, and they bragged to me---and showed me the paperwork that gave them not only FREE tuition, but also a USA government backed student loan for living expenses while they were going to school free. If a student from out of state tried this they would pay ten times as much. But if you ar an illegal alien from outside the country its FREE! I recommend that any Americans from lets say Nevada who want to go to the same state colleges and universities--PAID FOR BY OUR STATE TAXES, that you bare really an illegal alien from Mexico. You won't have any problems. Go to any college financial aid office they will point you to the "la Raza" direction and they will help. Just say "no speaka d Ingles". You are IN. They then DON'T pay back the student/government loans. Why should they? We are giving all of them another FREE TICKET for fun games.

Rhodie- There is NOTHING new about that status symbol. If you are a debtor YOU know it---even though others don't know it. Realtors may tell you that you are wealthy---but that is ONLY after you have successfully sold your house at the high as the moon prices they claim its worth. It is still nothing but wood nails and shingles, and all these rot in the rain without inputing more money. That why its called a "MONET PIT". Savings costs nothing.Financially, there are ONLY two kinds of people DEBTORS and creditors. Which one do YOU want to be? Once you answer that question its obvious what you need to do. Streamline your budget so tight that it squeaks, and then tighten it up more. If you can afford to pay banksters money--PROFIT, why can't you afford to pay YOU. They never care about you, yet they make all their money off you.If you really care about you and your family, cut them off and pay yourself first. If enough people walk from unsecured debt, banks will have to change.

Once you hit the first 100K, the second will be much faster, the third faster yet. The basic point is you do NOT NEED to rely on savings interest or CD's or WALL STREET.Look at his example: Deposit $100,000 in one dollar bills at any bank. At 0.1 % interest you will receive about $100 at the end of the year . Now ask how much an overdraft costs or monthly statement, and you will see who is getting the money. You will net out after one year about 100 dollar menu cheeseburgers. They might even give you a deal on that so you could make more money by negotiating cheeseburger prices. LOL: Put your savings in a federal credit union and relax. They don't pay 30 million dollar per year salaries like banks!

Rhodie- Using this strategy, you can EASILY afford to pay cash for a house---if thats what you want. You will only do this if you have never owned before. After the first one, it gets a lot easier to save. The more money you deposit on a house, the more you REALLY care how much it costs. When you stop using OPM, your perspective changes from a debtor who demands others pay for them, to a creditor who has NO DEBT. Realtors HATE cash buyers, you can't be tricked or fooled into buying "assets" (actually mortgage debt) they you can not afford. They want the "fish" who use OPM like GSE's or FHA to get their wannabe "wealth".There is NO free lunch. Pay your own way and make YOU your boss. The "bosses" hate that. Why?Be patient, and you can do it. Don't throw away your earned income on new cars, cable TV etc etc etc. Soon. you can pay cash for everything, and will learn you really don't need JUNK, and you will seek VALUE.Wealth is FREEDOM.

Imagine that YOU are a bank, but PAY YOURSELF FIRST. In only a few years you will have real money, this becomes sel-reinforcing so you save more."I completely agree with this statement. People should not buy houses just because someone talks them into it. The guy we listen to on the radio says the house payments should be no more than 33% of your take home, he prefers if it is only 25% (or nothing). It is the keeping up with the Jones' that has caused our current economic slump (coupled with government mismanagement of our tax $$). This is why i am such a strong proponent of cash only. Even if you pay off the CC at teh end of the month, there is a different feel to handing over cash vs swiping a card. When we went to cash only, our purchases dropped in half. Funny, our savings went up after that as well;)

Rhodie- I re-read your comments and I think you mised the point. Anything can happen once you buy a house! A group home can move next door, a gang can move into the area, or your next door neighbor may develop a fondness towards junk cars. But these really don't matter that much, IF YOU OWN THE HOUSE. Most people think that it's their "right" to buy a house that OTHER people get to pay for. This includes the "Obama stimulus" (I pay for that not buyers), The GSE's like FNMA and GNMA and of course programs like FHA. If you use these government programs, you REALLY can NOT afford to buy a house. You are using other peoples money for your so-called "investment".If you don't believe me try this experiment at any income level. Stop buying junk! Pay yourself first! Start out slowly and you will see how rapidly your savings accumulate. Imagine that YOU are a bank, but PAY YOURSELF FIRST. In only a few years you will have real money, this becomes sel-reinforcing so you save more.

When people start feeling that they are wealthy (the wealth effect), that is when bubbles start forming. Your net worth should never include appreciation in value of a house. This tricks you into thinking that you have more money than your really do. If you have a mortgage--by definition, YOU ARE A DEBTOR! Debtors "can" be wealthy, including Mr. Trump, but don't forget he has recently gone through TWO bankruptcys because of his Real Estate gambling. Read this headline from 2 weeks ago."...Billionaire real estate mogul Donald Trump is facing litigation from a group of 30 buyers who allege he misrepresented his stake in a $220 million luxury condominium project in downtown Tampa that failed after the development partners went into bankruptcy... You won't see this on his TV show.

Rhodie- Your speculative question can't be answered unless you know the absolute numbers on the total asset cost (cost of house + closing/purchasing sales costs and upkeep, repairs, taxes, insurance payments, etc). If you have NO mortage it is much easier to calculate.Generally (with or without a mortgage), as long as you did not refi since 1997, and you bought before fall 1998, add up ALL costs including mortgage interest, landscaping, everything. What is the sum of the numbers? add them up and cpomare to what you would CASH OUT (in hand) if you sold. Its that simple. If you bought low into a price bubble that still exists (most of this area) , you might have a net profit.A mortgage is the largest cost in a house purchase. The interest percentage is only a trick to make you think you are "wealth" . ANY interest can be deadly to your "investment". Would I get a loan to buy stock? Thats what happened in 1929. When people think of a house as an investment, they forget about its REAL costs.

  • posted at 12:43 am on Fri, Dec 11, 2009.

Rhoadie- Here is the bottom line: Over 60 years, since WWII housing has been averaging 3% per year of speculative equity (assuming the area is not in disrepair and averaging out price bubbles). If you use a mortgage to buy a house it is simple arithmetic. The question is: Is your mortgage above 3%? If it is, you are losing future gains in speculative equity to interest costs. If you are a cash buyer, you only have to calculate the opportunity cost of the principal you paid. All other scenarios are in some way involved with asset price bubbles or do to inside information that throws off the numbers (you have family members on the planning commission, local politics, etc etc).Deciphering this is simple, once you clear out the smoke screen left by housing bubble cheerleaders, who profit in both depressed markets and during asset bubbles. A 6% commish is EXACTLY like the vigorish or "vig" at a casino gambling table, instead of 3-5 % its 6%!The house ALWAYS wins, unless it starts playing the game and loses. Easy money also means easy losses.

I wouldn't necessarily buy a house in the current market. It's like buying something you know will be on sale next week. But if you are already in a house then, as the host says, you are only losing money if you sell it. We can look at our last house as an example: We bought at what we thought was a good price, three years later it was valued at several thousand less, we didn't lost any money because we didn't sell. Seven years later we sold it for almost twice what we paid so we made money despite at one time being upside down in the loan. Now I know people have to move because of jobs and such, but if there is no reason to sell right now, then it doesn't matter what your house is worth. It only matters when you sell it.

  • posted at 5:43 pm on Thu, Dec 10, 2009.

edumacation:The only problem I have with your arguements about the real estate market is that a house is an investment. We bought our house just as the market started going down. If we had waited 6-12 months we could have saved 1/5-1/4 the price of the house. This is something that bugs my money concious wife. But I have to remind her that we aren't planning to sell our house today, or next year or in five years. Yes we would have saved money if we waited, but there was no way of knowing that. And when it does come time to sell the house, like any other investment, we'd sell when it made sense.I've lisened (on the radio) to people talk about how they are upside down in their morgage and how horrible it is. The conversation is always the same, "Do you need to sell your home?", "well, no but.." "Then you haven't lost money yet, you'll only lose money if you sell it. That's true in stocks as well, you will only lose money if you sell them."

If an undocumented alien wanted to get a free (So-Called) Education all they would have to do is “BUY” their papers for a fee. Wa-la a US Citizen with birth certificate and social security Card for a couple of hundred dollars. But having lived around plenty of undocumented’s I don’t believe there will be a rush to go to college…

T&C said "Illegally enter America and get a FREE College education! How sad!" That is far from the truth. People who are not here legally do not get a free college education. They do not qualify for financial aid (for obvious reasons, right?) and maybe there's 1 or 2 scholarships out there that doesn't require a social security number. But the reality is that undocumented students have to pay non-resident tuition fees, which is about 8 times more than what a "regular" student would pay.

How many illegaly vote as Americans? Our own recent Chair of the California State Assembly was a border baby to illegal immigrants from Mexico. Thats no secret! ...and neither is the fact that HIS SON Esteben Nunez is being tried for a murder of a latino college student. The reason obama will succumb to miserable failure boils down to 3 things:1. Shoving obamacare down our throats2. Pushing 'Cap and Trade' massive energy taxes on every thing that consumes energy in America.3. Immigration reform that he intends to use to give amnesty to 12 million illegal aliens. Those are his top 3 priorities. Re-election is NOT a priority to him if he gets these 3 things done. That is why he is pushing ALL of it in the first year, because he knows in November, 2010, he is going to lose his congress. He is here to 'Fundamentally transform America', period. If he gets his top 3 priorities, he will do just that. If he can get that done in 4 years instead of 8, that would be just fine with him.

um, who do you think is paying those illegal immigrants in the first place? You think the government grants them money once they cross the border just to live? Illegal Immigrants take on any jobs that are offered, even those under minimum wage, by AMERICANS. They do the jobs American's don't want to do. and even if they are unemployed still won't do. Its sad really. The only way to make an effort to slow illegal immigration, is to not hire them. Plain and simple. But then, who would harvest your crops?

  • posted at 4:10 am on Tue, Dec 8, 2009.

Before all this B.S.ing continues, I'd like to clear up some things, "total amnesty" will not be granted to all the 12 million undocumented immigrants. From what has already been talked about regarding the immigration reform, there will be strict requirements for those who want to get residency (make sure you understand that, it's residency, not citizenship). Amongst these requirements, are: 1. They must have a clean criminal record, 2. They must learn English, and 3. Pay a fine. And get your facts clear before you start talking, immigrants come from everywhere, not just Mexico. And in case anyone doesn't know, the approximate cost to be granted residency is between $4,000-$15,000 per person! So it might be just me and my crazy ideas, but if more people were given the oppotunity to get their residency(those that meet the requirements) it would be a big boost to this crappy economy.

How many of us, under crushing debt, would think it is a good idea to spend more money? There is nothing to spend. There is no money to spend because it has all been squandered. The good and legitament expenses like education, S.S. and Medicare has been bankrupted by the mentality that spending more money is better than conserving what you have.Nothing this administration has done has done any good for the long term security of America. They've stuck gum in the leaks of the dam and called it fixed. Now thy want to harvest cement out of the dam to build a road to it? First of all, people who are here illegally are not "aliens", they are undocumented immigrants. And quite frankly if we think about it, unless you're Native American, we're all here in the U.S. thanks to the "invasion" of our ancestors into this country.Immigrants are a valuable asset to this country. They are hard working people, tax payers (like you and me) and if they are here "illegally" then they are paying taxes for many services that they cannot even benefit from. An immigration reform would greatly benefit our economy, 'cause I don't know if ya'll know, but it costs a lot of damn money for someone to get their "papers" and if more undocumented immigrants could benefit from this then imagine all the money that would come in! You get mad when they "take" your jobs but you don't realize how much they benefit the economy.
