The disgrace goes on and one. As a once rabid MLB fan (Houston Astros owing to my few short years in the mid-70’s living in southwest Houston), I’ve never been able to shake it off and love the game again. I tried the River Cats a few times but have never attended a Ports game. Still the same lack of enthusiasm.

I believe baseball is a fantastic sport - especially at the Little League level. One of my sons who had asthma during the 80’s found his own place in the sun each time he walked out to the mound to play the game - and play he did! No other major league game ever came close to the excitement of watching him grow on the field. It’s due to that experience for me that will have me forever in love with baseball.

But I’ll leave MLB to those who simply don’t care at all about the purity of what sports should be. I just hope it won’t end up like modern politics - that since everybody is doing it, that makes it ok. Well, it’s not okay. And who’s to say it isn’t happening in Sacramento and Stockton? After all, don’t these guys want desperately to be invited to the “Show” for their chance at greatness?

Oh, and the final nail in the proverbial coffin for me was when I learned that my beloved Astros jumped ship from the National League to the American. I’ve always contended that any baseball team that won’t send their pitchers to the batter’s box just ain’t baseball. There ended my 30+-year romance with the one team I loved through thick and thin. Yogi Berra’s most famous Yogi-ism was, “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over.” For me it’s over.

Should graduations return to the Grape Bowl?

Lodi Unified leaders are moving Lodi and Tokay high school graduations from the Grape Bowl to the Spanos Center at UOP in Stockton. They cite limited seating, costs and unpredictable weather at the Grape Bowl. But others say graduations at the Grape Bowl are an important Lodi tradition, and one reason many supported renovating the stadium. What do you think?
