The assumption in this article is that this group feeds off attention.... I don't know the authors beliefs or experience with religious fanaticism... but I would hope he would understand that attention is not at all the goal, and it's an awfully poor assumption to make.
Although, yes, arguing with a fool is fruitless, ignoring such bullying behavior is irresponsible as a citizen. What we should do is what many have done, gathered in peaceful protection (rather than protest) of the funeral, vigil, whatever being picketed. Form a human line to keep them away from the mourners who are in too much emotional pain to deal with such senseless and brutal hatred.
Serve and protect. Be a neighbor. Don't ignore a bully, and certainly don't ignore one who thinks they are righteously doing God's good work, because those are the type that never stop.
