(Family Features) Available in a variety of colors, sizes and scents, candles are a favorite decorative item seen in homes everywhere. While some are drawn to the glow an open flame brings to a room, others adore candles for the calming benefits of aromatherapy.

Candles made from soy have gained wide popularity within the last few years. Here are some reasons why this type of candle is so popular:

Biodegradable: Soybeans are vegetables, so soy candle wax is naturally biodegradable. Compared to oily paraffin wax, soy wax is easier to clean up if a spill occurs.

Long Burning: While soy candles tend to be more expensive than their paraffin counterparts, they have a much longer burn time.

Renewable: Soy is a renewable resource, unlike paraffin, which is made from oil. Buying soy products - such as soy candles - helps U.S farmers. Many farmers markets have booths where candles made from locally grown soy are sold.

Clean Burning: Soy wax does not contain the petrol-carbon soot that is found in paraffin candles. Over time, this soot can darken furniture, ceilings, walls and contaminate the air your family breathes.

Slow Scents: Due to a slow burning time, soy candles release oil over many hours versus paraffin candles which release the scents immediately when lit.

No matter which type you choose, candles are a great way to bring a little ambiance into any room in your home.
