Walter F. Pruss, 89, of Lodi, died Jan. 17 in a local hospital. He was born Jan. 2, 1916, in Bridgeport, Conn., where he graduated from Bridgeport High School.

Mr. Pruss graduated from the University of Alaska in Fairbanks, Alaska. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and also in the Korea conflict.

He was discharged as a Major in 1963 after 17 years of service, and then settled in Lodi. He was a former member of the San Joaquin County Grand Jury. He was also a member of the Lodi SIRS, the Lodi Historical Society, and was a charter member of the Lodi Police Department Partners. He enjoyed gardening and traveling.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Janet Pruss, of Lodi; and son, James Walter Pruss, of Lodi.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elma B. Pruss, in 1978; and one sister.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Evergreen Chapel at Cherokee Memorial Park, Highway 99 and Harney Lane, Lodi, with Chaplain Bill Sherrill of the Lodi Police Department officiating. Inurnment will be private.

A Family Memorial Registry may be signed from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday at Cherokee Memorial Funeral Home, 831 Industrial Way, near Beckman Road in Lodi.

Cherokee Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
