Jose N. Sanchez, 83, of Stockton, who formerly lived in Lodi, Acampo and Morada, died Feb. 16 at a local health care center after a long illness.

He was born Feb. 11, 1920 in Cumby, Texas, moved to Mexico with his family at the age of 6 and settled in California five years later.

Mr. Sanchez enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942 and was discharged in 1946. He settled in Acampo in 1946 and married Mercedes Barela in October 1948. Three years later, they moved to Morada.

Mr. Sanchez was an iron molder at Lodi Iron Works for 28 years before his retirement. He was a member of Disabled Veterans of America and St. Michael's Catholic Church in Morada. He enjoyed fishing and camping.

He is survived by his wife, Mercedes Sanchez, of Stockton; daughters, Isabel Sanchez, Eleanor Valdez, Margie Weaver and Teresa Helmer; brothers, David, Gomez, Adolph and Thomas Sanchez; sisters, Maria Ramirez and Stella Sanchez; five grandsons and one great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Mercedes Sanchez, of Stockton.

A funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Evergreen Chapel at Cherokee Memorial Park in Lodi with Father Patrick Walker of St. Michael's Catholic Church officiating. Committal will be at Cherokee Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be sent to a favorite charity.

Lodi Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
