Esther Melvina Oster Schmidt, 98, of Carmichael and formerly of Lodi, died April 3. She was born on Oct. 15,1914 in Monango, N.D.

Mrs. Schmidt taught elementary school and was employed by the San Joaquin Local Health District before retiring. She was selected as the Outstanding Senior Woman of the Year by the Board of Supervisors of San Joaquin County for her service and dedication to the community. She was a member of the Missouri Synod Lutheran Church, and served in the choir, where she was the conductor. She was a member of the North Dakota District Executive Women’s Missionary League Board, the Community Concert Board, State March of Dimes and the Women’s Club, and served as president of the American Legion Auxiliary.

She conducted and organized the Saints A Marchin’ band, and enjoyed entertaining at schools, convalescent hospitals, and county and state fairs.

She is survived by her sons, Curtis Schmidt of Spokane, Wash. and Terry Schmidt of Florida; daughter, Madalyn Shepard of Carmichael; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Lodi Memorial Cemetery, 5750 E. Pine St., Lodi, with the Rev. John Kah of St. Peter Lutheran Church officiating.

Rocha’s Mortuary is assisting the family with arrangements.
