Lxana DeGrandmont earned Double Gold at Great West Gym Fest International Invitational USA Women's Gymnastics Competition in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho from Feb. 22 to 24. Great West Gym Fest is one of the largest competitions in the U.S., with 1,000 athletes competing over three days.

Lxana scored a 9.600 on floor (first); a personal best, 9.100, on vault (second); beam (fourth); and all-around (third) on Feb. 22.

This qualified Lxana for the prestigious "Big Show" the next evening on her favorite event, the floor exercise. The Big Show takes the top qualifiers from each session to compete and place an overall event champion.

Lxana rose to the opportunity and performed a spectacular floor routine to post a season best — 9.750 — and win another gold, first overall on floor, in front of 2,000 spectators, judges, college coaches, and eight former Olympians. Three-time Olympic Team member John Roethlisberger awarded Lxana her gold medal.

Lxana DeGrandmont is a 14-year-old freshman at Lodi High School and competes at level 9 for Champion Gymnastics Academy in Stockton. Champion Gymnastics Academy was awarded the first-place All-Around Team trophy at Great West Gym Fest.

Lxana has the goal of attending an NCAA-accredited university and competing in gymnastics at that level.

The next local competition for Lxana is the Delta Classic Gymnastics Invitational at the Stockton Auditorium in Stockton on March 9 and 10, hosted by Champion Gymnastics Academy.

Should graduations return to the Grape Bowl?

Lodi Unified leaders are moving Lodi and Tokay high school graduations from the Grape Bowl to the Spanos Center at UOP in Stockton. They cite limited seating, costs and unpredictable weather at the Grape Bowl. But others say graduations at the Grape Bowl are an important Lodi tradition, and one reason many supported renovating the stadium. What do you think?
