Tokay High School lacks school spirit

In my opinion, Tokay High School's spirit is nowhere — no fun, no motivations.

Since the beginning of 2012-2013 school year, our school rallies and activities have been reduced by a lot. Many of the ones students want to organize have been denied.

One example happened with the Latinos Club de las Americas. Although I think it is important to speak out, I am just one member of the club.

We proposed three months in advance that a Cinco de Mayo celebration be held. We thought our proposal was accepted. However, assistant principal Mrs. Morrell notified the Latinos Club two weeks before the event that it was not going to be allowed after all.

This was not the first time our club was denied a cultural celebration, and the news hurt a lot of Latinos Club members. So a couple of members started a petition, asking the administration to reconsider the activity. More than 600 Tokay High students signed it.

We were refused an appointment by Mrs. Morrell. We then went to our principal Mr. Sandstrom, and we were refused once again. So we decided to take it to the superintendent.

Our May 8 e-mail was forwarded to assistant superintendent of secondary education Dawn Vetica. Later that day Tokay High School assistant principal Mrs. Whisler responded by email saying that she understood the frustrations and concerns. She asked if officers of the Latinos Club could meet Thursday May 9.

Mr. Sandstrom, Mrs. Morrell, and Mrs Whisler met with us. We asked why we could not have our cultural celebration. Mr. Sandstrom said his main concern was school safety and the celebration's interference with pilot testing.

He also said we were not the only club wanting to have an activity. School is over Friday and it's too late to schedule any more activities this year.

However, there was agreement by several in the meeting that next year is a new year. I and other Latinos Club members appreciate the administration's willingness to meet and consider solutions.

We hope that better planning and communications will create a better outcome next year.
