Two scholarships were presented by Suzanne Benbrook in the absence of Carol Marvel, scholarship chairman, of the Lodi Garden Club. They went to Jordan Sparrowk of Lodi High School and Ut Huynh of Bear Creek High School. Both have been active beyond their school classrooms.

Sparrowk will attend California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, where he will prepare for a career in land, farm and ranch management. Environmental science is what Huynh has chosen as her career. She will be studying at Humboldt State University.

Sparrowk is a nine-year member of the Ione 4-H Club, where he has served as president and in other offices. He has been a volunteer for the Charity for Homeless Teens and Families, a team leader for rodeos for special needs kids, a CHI exchange student host brother, a tutor in agriculture and science, a member of Lodi High’s Chapter One, Future Farmers of America, and a four-year member of the California Scholarship Federation.

In addition, he has been a six-year member of the California High School Rodeo Association, serving as vice president and president of District 3, and is the current state vice president. His hobbies and interests all center around rodeos, agriculture and the family ranch. He likes talking to farmers who can give him information about crops and marketing ideas.

“Fishing and basketball are ways to get some exercise and relax,” he says, adding that he is currently enrolled in a floral design class.

During her high school, Huynh has participated in California Coastal Cleanup and Earth Day projects. She is a four-year member of the California Scholarship Federation and a two-year member of the National Honors Society, and has also held memberships in the Live in a Free Environment, the Red Cross and the Swing clubs during all or most of her high school years.

She is also a sports enthusiast, playing women’s varsity tennis for three years, and participating in women’s varsity badminton and wrestling during her sophomore year.
