Recently, Carol Evans and Janet Bange of PALS, addressed AAUW about People Assisting Lodi Shelter, a nonprofit, no-kill, animal adoption service that is part of the Lodi Animal Shelter.

Carol Evans provided a brief history of PALS. She said that in 2004, Donna Bradshaw was very upset that the Lodi Animal Shelter’s policy only allowed animals to be returned to their owners or to be euthanized. Donna and Nancy Alumbaugh went to the city council and asked for an additional shelter that provided an adoption service, with a no-kill policy. They created a nonprofit agency and today PALS account for thousands of pet adoptions in Lodi. PALS manages the licensing of pets, pays for vaccinations and veterinary services. PALS funds and staffs an exercise area for dogs. Recently, PALS upgraded the interior of the shelter for appeal, cleanliness and safety.

Soon, Carol said, PALS will move to a newer and bigger facility at the site of Sycamore Kennels with an adjoining veterinary clinic.

Janet Bange described her classroom humane education program. She and a team of volunteers visit classrooms in Lodi Unified to teach the children how to be community helpers who help animals in their community. As a reward for good learning, the children can pet Molly, the dog visitor the team brings.

She concluded by telling the story of Buster Posey, a stray dog who was running around Costco for six months. No one could get near him, although Costco employees left him hotdogs. Finally, one volunteer was able to gain the dog’s trust enough that the dog could be collared. They took Buster to the shelter where he was fed, cleaned, petted, and socialized and now Buster is happily adopted to his forever home.

The next AAUW meeting will take place on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Knowlton Gallery. Kathleen Dunphy, a plein air artist, will present the program. Contact Nanette Green at 209-367-4238 for further information about the program and Bobbie Landau at 209-344-5711 for membership information.
