Lion Corey Wright, the administrator for Vienna Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, was presented with a Melvin Jones Fellowship at a recent Lodi Lions Club installation dinner. The Melvin Jones Fellowship, presented by the Lodi Lions Club through the Lions Club International Foundation, was awarded to Wright as a lifetime achievement award for his enduring commitment to volunteerism and community service since becoming a member of the Lodi Lions Club in 1987.

The Fellowship is named after Melvin Jones, the founder of Lions Club International. Melvin Jones, an associate of an insurance firm in Chicago, Ill., founded Lions Clubs International in 1917, when he asked local businessmen’s groups, “What if these men, who are successful because of their drive, intelligence and ambition, were to put their talents to work improving their communities?”

Lions Clubs later focused their efforts in sight conservation and related services at the behest of Helen Keller in 1925, when she addressed the Lions Club International Convention, challenging the Lions to become “knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness”. Lions Clubs International is the world’s largest service club organization with more than 1.35 million members in approximately 46,000 clubs in more than 207 countries and geographical areas around the world.

Wright is a 1985 graduate of California State University at Northridge and he has been the administrator of Vienna Nursing and Rehabilitation Center since the fall of 1987. He and his wife Karen have three children.

The Lodi Lions Club meets every Wednesday at noon at Frank Johnson/Burgundy Hall at the Grape Festival grounds. For more information or to get involved with the Lodi Lions Club, contact Lion Past-President Grant Fletcher at 333-4500 or visit www.LodiLions.org.
