Soroptimist International of Lodi recently submitted an application to Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and was granted $500 toward the HUGS project (Hope, Understanding, Goals and Support).

This project assists an emergency shelter through the gift of a 33-gallon storage bin filled with supplies and necessities for women setting up their own homes after leaving a shelter. Germaine Burke, past president of Soroptimist International of Lodi, got the idea for the grant through the Soroptimist, Best for Women magazine.

A list of needed items was made up with help from Suzanne Mangum, executive director of Lodi House, and Karen West, from Hope Harbor. With the $500 budget in mind, $50 was spent per bin. Ten storage bins were filled with laundry soap, trash bags, cleaning supplies and personal hygiene products so that five containers would go to Hope Harbor and another five to Lodi House.

The first week of February, the 10 bins were presented by Bev Lacy and Germaine Burke to Lodi House and Hope Harbor. This is just another way Soroptimists have found to help those women in need in the community.

Soroptimist International of Lodi is working in cooperation with Soroptimist International of Lodi Sunrise, and the Lodi branches of the Salvation Army, Business and Professional Women’s Foundation and American Association for University Women to host a Stop Human Trafficking workshop. The event will be held from 9:30 a.m. to noon March 5 at Temple Baptist Church. For information, call 334-5389.

Women from the area are invited to attend to learn more about this problem. The program speaker is Kay Buck, executive director of the Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking in Los Angeles.

The Rollin’ in Ribs IV fundraiser is scheduled for May 14. For tickets or information, call 334-5389.

Soroptimists are women who work in a variety of professions and whose objective is improving the lives of women and girls. New members are welcome to join and are encouraged to call our membership committee at 369-8589. For more information, visit the Soroptimist website at www.lodi@soroptimist.org, or e-mail silodi@soroptimist.net. Meetings are held at noon on Tuesdays from September through June at Dee Dee’s Family Restaurant in Lodi.
