This being Tree Lodi’s 8th anniversary, it seems fitting to outline a few of our city’s Urban Forestry Foundation’s accomplishments for those who may not know much about us.

Soon after we opened in 2005, we were asked by the city council to participate in the 2006 planting of Lodi’s 100 Centennial cork oak trees. It was an honor to be included in this project when we were so new. The final tree in the series is the beautiful one in front of the wall at Hutchins Street Square.

Each year, we have participated in Arbor Day and Earth Day celebrations at schools and parks, planting one or more trees on each occasion with the help of students, scouts and citizen volunteers. We particularly enjoy having young people work with us as it gives us the opportunity to teach them about maintaining their hometown’s forest canopy.

Tree Lodi’s arborists have held educational events at Hutchins Street Square and given planting and pruning demonstrations in almost all of Lodi’s many parks. We have participated in city-wide clean-up days in parks and at Lodi Lake. All these volunteer services have saved the city thousands of dollars in these times of low budges and fewer park maintenance workers.

We proudly promote Lodi by helping to maintain its status as a Tree City USA, an honor it has held for 13 years. We are also members of the Lodi Community Foundation and the Chamber of Commerce.

Our biggest contribution to Lodi’s urban forest has been the planting of 218 trees at DeBenedetti Park on Arbor Day in 2012, with the help of approximately 200 volunteers. We kept those trees watered by hand all last summer and as a result they have had an excellent survival rate.

The key to our success has been the support of volunteers when called upon, but as with volunteers everywhere, we must maintain interest and constantly encourage new people to join us.
